About Jotsit
We exist to make New York City's public contractor licensing data accessible, searchable, and easy to understand for every homeowner.
The Problem
Hiring a contractor for home improvements is a major financial and emotional investment. The NYC Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) requires contractors to be licensed to protect consumers from fraud, shoddy work, and financial ruin. However, finding and verifying this public license data has traditionally been difficult and cumbersome.
Unlicensed contractors often operate under the radar, and consumers without an easy way to verify credentials are at risk.
What We Do
Aggregate Data
We pull weekly updates directly from the NYC Open Data portal to ensure our records match the city's official database.
Make it Searchable
Our platform allows you to search by business name, DBA, or browse contractors working specifically in your borough or neighborhood.
Provide Clarity
We translate bureaucratic status codes into clear, color-coded badges so you immediately know if a license is active, expiring, or revoked.
Our Commitment
Jotsit is completely free to use. We do not charge contractors to be listed (listings are pulled automatically from public records), and we do not accept payment to remove or hide negative license statuses.
Our mission is consumer protection through radical transparency.
