How We Verify
Our data comes directly from NYC's official licensing database — here's exactly how it works.
The Source
All contractor license data on Jotsit is sourced directly from the NYC Open Data portal, specifically the NYC Department of Consumer and Worker Protection license database. This is the same database maintained by the city — we do not create or modify any records.
Important Distinction
Plumbing and Electrical work are NOT covered by a DCWP license. These specialized trades require separate licenses issued by the NYC Department of Buildings (DOB). Always verify DOB licenses separately for these trades.
Understanding License Statuses
Active
The contractor holds a valid, current license and is legally permitted to operate. They have passed background checks and submitted required bonds/insurance.
Expiring Soon / Ready for Renewal
The license is currently valid but will expire within the next 90 days. If your project extends past the expiration date, ensure they intend to renew.
Expired / Revoked / Suspended
The contractor is not legally permitted to perform home improvements in NYC. A revoked license usually indicates serious violations or failure to satisfy consumer complaints.
What does a DCWP license require?
To obtain a Home Improvement Contractor license in NYC, a business must:
- Pass a criminal background check and fingerprinting.
- Pass the DCWP Home Improvement Exam (proving knowledge of consumer protection laws).
- Provide proof of Workers' Compensation Insurance (if they have employees).
- Provide a $20,000 Trust Fund enrollment or Surety Bond to protect consumers from financial loss.
